3 Steps in the Journey to Enroll in Coverage Before You’re Medicare-Eligible

We use a three-step approach of Prepare, Review, and Enroll to help you find and enroll in coverage that’s right for you before you’re Medicare-eligible.

We recommend you have these things on hand before beginning your search for health insurance coverage:

  • Social security numbers (or documents for legal immigrants) for all members of your family

  • Estimated household income

  • How much you could afford to spend on out-of-pocket costs throughout the year

  • Policy numbers for current health coverage for anyone in your family

  • A list of your prescriptions, including dosage and frequency

  • Names of any doctors and hospitals you want to continue to use

  • Planned doctor visits and procedures for the next year

Important: If you choose to apply for a federal tax credit or a lower-cost health coverage option, you will need to estimate your household income for the year.

Our online tools can help guide you to a plan suited for you and your family, so consider setting up an online account. You can research your options if you don’t set up an account, but you can’t save your results.

Health plans are categorized into different levels based on how much you pay for premiums and out-of-pocket costs.

Typically plans are separated into levels of coverage based on:

The percentage of health care costs covered

  • Monthly premium costs

  • Potential out-of-pocket costs

In addition, it is good to understand what type of network the plan works with and if your doctors are within that network. It will cost you less to use the doctors and facilities inside the plan’s network you choose.

Whether you use the website or speak with a benefit advisor, Via Benefits guides you through your options and will help you choose plans that cover your needs and include your doctors. Select Learn More to read about the difference between plan networks.

Once you’ve decided what type of coverage is right for you, you’re ready to enroll.

Via Benefits is here to help you find insurance regardless of your state of residence. You may be referred to the marketplace in your state or directly to an insurance carrier to complete your application and enroll in coverage.

If the plan you’ve selected offers online enrollment — that option saves time.

If the plan you’ve selected doesn’t offer online enrollment, or you prefer calling, Via Benefits will answer your questions and give you the time you need to be/feel confident about your choice. We recommend calling us and making an appointment, especially during Open Enrollment Period from November 1 - December 15.
